A new poll shows that nearly 7 out of 10 Americans believe the profits of health insurance companies were responsible for the death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson this month.
Thompson was killed by a gunshot last week, outside the hotel in midtown Manhattan where UnitedHealth Group held its annual investor conference.
The NORC survey at the University of Chicago found that 67 percent of Americans blamed health insurance companies for their profits, while 69 percent blamed them for denying health coverage.
The survey showed that nearly 8 out of 10 people believed the person who killed Thompson was moderately or greatly responsible for his death.

Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty to all charges, including murder, against him on Monday. He is accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson earlier this month in Manhattan.
According to a poll, less than half, or 41 percent, of Americans blamed layoffs on health insurance and job losses. Forty percent blamed the media, and 45 percent blamed the political divisions in the United States.
Twenty-four percent said personal issues in the CEO’s life were either a great deal or moderately responsible, according to the survey.
The survey was conducted nationwide from 12-16 December among 1001 adults 18 years and older. The margin of error at 95 percent confidence was 4.2 percentage points.
