A former Kentucky deputy sheriff who was accused of the murder of a Kentucky judge in September was charged with new crimes on Monday.

The arraignment was held Monday in the Letcher County Courthouse, the same courthouse in which Shawn “Mickey Stines” is accused of shooting Kentucky District Judge Kevin Mullins to death in his chambers on Sept. 19, in that building.

Stines’ attorney, who is 43 years old, has pleaded Monday not guilty to the new charge of murdering a public servant.

The motive for the alleged murder by Mullins is not yet clear.

Stines was deposed just days before the shooting in a lawsuit that alleged he failed to investigate a deputy who had sexually abused an unnamed woman in Mullins’ chambers.

The Kentucky State Police had previously stated that the shooting took place “after an argument in the courthouse.” Letcher County Circuit clerk Mike Watts stated that Stines and Mullins shared a lunch earlier in the day.

Mullins, a judge in the district court of New York, was found with multiple gunshot injuries after a 911 operator reported gunfire within the courthouse.

Stines was arrested without incident in the courthouse. After his arrest, he retired from his post as sheriff.
