According to authorities, Tommy Lazzaro was killed tragically in a hunting accident over the weekend. He was a former Central Michigan QB and sergeant with the United States Army. He was 27.
Lazzaro was shot on Sunday by a stray gunshot at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, while he was driving a car to assist another soldier with car troubles. A spokesperson for the 7th Special Forces Group confirmed this to Task & Purpose.
The shot was fired by a hunter on the range. Walton County Sheriff’s Office reported that the incident was a “tragic hunting accident.”

“We deeply mourn the loss of U.S. Army Sgt. Thomas Lazzaro of the 2nd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne),” Col. Patrick Nelson, 7th SFG(A) commander, said in a statement to the news site.
“We will always remember his courage, dedication, and commitment to protecting our freedoms. Thomas’ absence will be felt by those who worked with him professionally and personally. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to his family, comrades, and friends during this difficult time.”
Central Michigan released a similar statement to mourn the passing of the former Chippewas QB.
In a school statement, Jim McElwain, former head coach of the program said, “Tommy was a leader in many ways when he took over. CMU Football is blessed to have had him. We will never forget what he did for so many of us. All of the Chippewas will miss him.”
Lazzaro spent four years with Central Michigan where he made five starts between 2016 and 2019. In 2019, he helped the Chippewas achieve a 6-2 conference record and a bowl appearance. His career at Central Michigan ended with 542 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns, and 758 yards passing and five touchdowns.
Central Michigan reports that Lazzaro, who graduated in 2019 with a degree from the University of Michigan in entrepreneurship, joined the Army in order to follow his father and grandfather.
